Usual Suspects, The
Usual Suspects, The (1995)

IMDB rating: 8.70

Plot: After a waterfront explosion, Verbal (Kevin Spacey), an eye-witness and participant tells the story of events leading up to the conflagration. The story begins when five men are rounded up for a line-up, and grilled about a truck hijacking (the usual suspects). Least pleased is Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) a crooked cop - exposed, indicted, but now desperately trying to go straight. The cops won’t leave him alone, however, and as they wait for their lawyers to post bail, he is talked into doing one more job with the other four. All goes tolerably well until the influence of the legendary, seemingly omnipotent “Keyser Soze” is felt. Although set in the modern day, it has much of the texture of the forties, plus suspense, intrigue (a fairly high body count), and lots of twists in the plot.

Good Mafia/Mob Movies?
Hi, so far I know off:

1) Godfather
2) Godfather 2
3) Scarface
4) Goodfellas
5) Carlito’s Way
6) Casino
7) A Bronx Tale
8) Once Upon A Time In America

And a few others like Donnie Brasco, Mobsters and Untouchables, which I didn’t really like. I’m looking for movies made after the 70’s and not before. For the love of god, the only good mafia movie from the 70’s was Godfather.

Movies like The Usual Suspects and Pulp Fiction/Reservoir dogs don’t really count. I’m talking more about Goodfellas/Casino/Bronx Tale type mob movies.

Any advice?
American Gangster? Naah.. I’m looking for more italian then anything… Again, something along the lines of Bronx Tale/Goodfellas/Casino.

American Gangster?

Trust me you’ll LOVE this movie "We own the night" - It’s a newer movie, and has to do with the New York Police Department and Russian Mob. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen, I’m sure you’ll appreciate it.

its a new one but i thought Public Enemies was awesome

The Departed kinda involves that, it’s pretty good. Boondock Saints and Boondock Saints II, also. Gangster Wars is alright, but not one of my personal favs. And then of course there is the Sopranos, it’s not a movie but heh, still good.

In random order:
Road to Perdition, 2002 (set in the 30s)
Miller’s crossing, 1990 (set in the 30s)
The Departed, 2006
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, 1998 (set in England, Heavy Brit accents)
Layer Cake, 2004 (another Brit flick, lighter accents) Daniel Craig, A good Brit mob movie

Cidade de Deus (City of God), 2002 (Brazil, in Portuguese, with English subtitles) A different kind of Mob movie. Based on the child gangs of Brazil. A rise and fall epic tale of 3 young boys. It follows their criminal careers in the late 60s and 70s up to their peak power in early 1980s, when they reach their late 20s. This movie generally makes the top five of almost every mob movie list. Don’t bother with the sequel City of Men.

Heat, 1996 (more of a cops vs robbers, but with some mob elements, De Niro and Pacino together)
The Usual suspects, 1995 (Mob, caper, mystery, thriller)
Blood in Blood out 1993 (epic about Chicano gang wars. 3 teens who grow their separate ways)
American me, 1992 (similar, but better, Chcano prison gangs, mexican mafia)
New Jack City 1991 (Urban mafia movie, black drug lords and undercover cops)
Bugsy, 1991, Famous Jewish mobster of the 1930s Bugsy Siegel, built the first Las Vegas casino.
King of New York, 1990, Chrisopher Walken
American Gangster, 2007, Denzel Washington
Hoodlum 1997, Lawrence Fishburne

Have you seen all the 70s gangster movies or are you just guessing?
Mean Streets (Martin Scorsese’s first Mob movie)
Bonnie and Clyde (An epic about the famous bank robbing couple of the 1930’s)
The Getaway, 1972, Bank robbers, being chased by the mob and the cops
Charley Varrick, 1973, more bank robbers, pursued by vicious mob thugs
Dillinger, 1973
